OpenAI Seeks Record-Breaking Private Round

The AI giant is reportedly raising tens of billions of dollars to stay private longer, setting a new ceiling for the industry.

OpenAI is reportedly preparing to raise another massive chunk of private capital instead of rushing to public markets. According to sources, the company is close to closing a funding round that could bring in up to $30 billion. This new injection of cash would value the AI lab at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis.

The round is being led by Coatue, along with investors from the United Arab Emirates. Interestingly, this move comes just one month after Bloomberg reported similar figures, though at a slightly higher valuation of $1.4 trillion. Since the terms are still under negotiation, the final numbers could shift before the deal is officially signed.

There may be more to this deal than just cash on the table. Reports suggest the UAE funding could be tied to a separate agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from that region. This strategic partnership could help the company manage the intense energy and hardware demands of its growing models. OpenAI has declined to comment on these reports.

To understand how we got here, it helps to look at the company's rapid valuation climb. In March, OpenAI completed its most recent funding round, which valued the ChatGPT maker at $852 billion on a post-money basis. Just a few months later, the company filed confidential paperwork for an initial public offering in June. That step signaled an intention to go public, but the current push for private funding suggests a shift in strategy.

If OpenAI successfully commands a valuation above $1 trillion in this private round, it will break the record for the most valuable private company in history. This achievement would set a remarkably high bar for its eventual IPO. Investors and analysts will likely expect the company to meet or exceed this valuation when it finally lists on a public exchange.

The timing of this raise also has broader implications for the rest of the AI sector. Specifically, it puts pressure on Anthropic, which is widely believed to be close to its own public debut. Rumors indicate that Anthropic’s public S-1 filing could drop at any moment. The company is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its IPO.

Anthropic recently raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation. At the time, many observers thought that would be its last major private round before going public. However, with OpenAI potentially pushing its private valuation to $1.25 trillion, the competitive landscape for AI valuations has shifted significantly. Both companies filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, highlighting how closely their trajectories are intertwined.

For now, the details remain fluid as negotiations continue. Whether the valuation settles at $1.25 trillion or closer to the previously reported $1.4 trillion, the scale of this funding round is unprecedented. It signals that private capital is still flowing into the AI sector at extraordinary levels, even as companies prepare for public scrutiny.
